Insulation and Air Sealing
Insulation and airtightness are what make a new home comfortable and cheap to heat, and what the Step Code actually measures.
The BC Energy Step Code sets performance targets for new homes, and insulation plus air sealing are the biggest levers for meeting them. We manage the insulation scope with your energy advisor: batt, blown-in, spray foam or exterior continuous insulation, chosen for the wall and roof assemblies in your design.
Air sealing is where good insulation is often undone. Gaps around windows, penetrations, top plates and the rim joist let air bypass the insulation. We coordinate sealing before insulation goes in, and the blower-door test that measures airtightness is scheduled so there is still time to fix leaks before drywall closes the walls.
A tighter house needs controlled ventilation, so insulation is planned alongside the HVAC and heat recovery ventilator, not separately from them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a blower-door test?
A fan test that measures how airtight the house is. Step Code compliance includes an airtightness target, so we schedule the test while walls are still accessible.
Why does insulation need to be planned with ventilation?
A tighter house traps moisture and stale air unless it has controlled ventilation, so the insulation, air sealing and HRV or ERV are designed together.
Can you upgrade insulation in an existing house?
Yes, during renovations and additions. Contact us for a free quote.
